With
only fifteen families, our church was founded in 1882 as the Swedish
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tacoma, one of the first in the Washington
Territory. The first pastor, A.G. Anderson, was called in 1884 and
stayed for nine years. During that time, many new families arrived
in the area, including many Norwegians. After a few moves, our current building was
started in 1926, and completed in 1929. We burned our mortgage in 1946!
Over the years, our mission has changed and
there is no longer a need to support Swedish immigrants. However, we still observe some of their customs
and continue to recognize the Swedish origin of our congregation.
We have now become part of the larger Lutheran body in our community in a wider world.
Currently our church membership is approximately
220 confirmed members of various ethnic backgrounds.
